Gorney: It won't be easy for UGA to replace ace recruiter Dell McGee

Dell McGee has taken the Georgia State coaching job after being one of the best recruiters in the country and stacking up elite running backs at Georgia for years.

McGee’s departure from Athens has certainly caught the attention of the big dogs.

“Man, that’s crazy,” five-star running back Jordon Davison from Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei said.

“He played a big role in my recruitment for UGA. He’s developed some of the greatest backs that came through there so I feel it will affect a lot with me and other recruits. it all depends on who they end up hiring to replace him, might be someone who i have a relationship with and then it wouldn’t change anything.”

There have been some preliminary names thrown around to replace McGee but coach Kirby Smart has a big decision to make moving forward. Some significant assistants have left Georgia and the Bulldogs have brought in some big names. Replacing McGee, though, will be key.

The new Georgia State coach was famous for sending daily Bible messages to his recruits – and many found it as a personal touch that other position coaches weren’t doing.

Over the last several years, McGee helped sign some of the best running backs in the country.

In Georgia’s 2024 class, McGee landed Nate Frazier out of Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei, the top-rated all-purpose back in the country. The Bulldogs also signed four-star running backs Chauncey Bowens and Dwight Phillips.

McGee also did a fantastic job developing running backs as Daijun Edwards led the Bulldogs with 880 yards and 13 touchdowns and former five-star Kendall Milton totaled 790 yards and 14 scores.

Just days ago, 2026 running back Tradarian Ball from Texarkana, Texas, landed an offer from Georgia following an impressive time in the 100-meter dash.

Texas, Texas A&M and Ole Miss are others involved early with Ball but Georgia has become a main contender after the offer and being involved for a short time with McGee.

“It’s crazy how fast coaches leave schools but him leaving doesn’t affect how I see Georgia,” Ball said. “They’re still a major team in my recruitment and I like my chances with them.”

Speaking to the zaniness of the coaching carousel and how fast things can change, four-star running back Alvin Henderson, who has Georgia, Florida State and Auburn among others at the top, was asked for a comment on McGee’s departure on Friday.

A couple hours later, he responded:

“Has he officially left?” Henderson asked.
