UPDATED with Night 3 winners: The Color Purple reigned on the third night of the NAACP Image Awards, taking the Ensemble Cast prize along with Breakthrough Creative for director Blitz Bazawule.
Other honorees on the film side Wednesday included A Thousand and One for Cinematography, Invisible Beauty (Documentary) and Brother (Independent Motion Picture).
Among the television winners were Michael B. Jordan, who took Outstanding Guest Performance for hosting Saturday Night Live last year, along with The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder (Outstanding Animated Series), High on the Hog: How African American Cuisine Transformed America (Documentary) and Percy Jackson and the Olympians‘ Leah Sava Jeffries (Outstanding Performance by a Youth).
A pair of winners revealed Wednesday were in combined TV and movie categories: Creed III took the Stunt Ensemble Prize, and Dear Mama‘s Allen Hughes went home with the trophy for Directing in a Documentary.
HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show was named Outstanding Variety Show, DC Young Fly of Celebrity Squares was named Outstanding Host and Issa Rae of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse won for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance on Night 2 of the NAACP Image Awards.
The winners in the mostly TV categories were announced Tuesday during a virtual awards ceremony as part of a weeklong rollout of winners across various events. That all comes ahead of Saturday’s main 55th NAACP Image Awards, hosted by Queen Latifah and airing live on BET and CBS.
Other winners today included VH1’s Wild ‘N Out, named Outstanding Reality Program, Reality Competition or Game Show; Leslie Jones, for Outstanding Performance in a Short Form Series for The Daily Show After The Cut; and Kyla Pratt, for her voice-over work on Disney+’s The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder.
On Monday, Image Awards were bestowed in the music and books categories, with winners including Usher, H.E.R., Megan Thee Stallion, Ciara, Kirk Franklin, Tems and the soundtrack to The Color Purple. Victoria Monét and Chris Brown were double winners.
Usher is also up for Saturday’s marquee Entertainer of the Year in a category that also includes Keke Palmer, Oscar Best Actor nominee Colman Domingo, Fantasia Barrino and Halle Bailey. The weekend ceremony will also see poet Amanda Gorman receive the group’s Chairman’s Award, and New Edition inducted into the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame.
Also being honored this week is R&B singer-songwriter Frankie Beverly, who will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award, and creative director/costume designer June Ambrose, who will receive the Vanguard Award. Both those honors will be bestowed during Friday’s non-televised NAACP Image Awards Fashion Show.
