Sompo International creates Chief Underwriting Officer post | Insurance Business America
The CEO says the new role is critical at this stage of the company’s growth

Property and casualty insurance provider Sompo International has appointed Risa Ryan as chief underwriting officer, a newly created position at the company.
“I am delighted to welcome Risa to Sompo International,” CEO James Shea said in a press release. “CUO’s role is critical at this stage of our growth to ensure we remain flexible and focused on our customers across markets.
“It is vital that we build the global underwriting communities and tools across Sompo International and work closely with Sompo Japan as more of our products and engagements are global. I am confident that Risa, with her wealth of experience and deep knowledge of the insurance industry, will play a crucial role in the next phase of our organization.”
Based in New Jersey, Ryan joined Sompo International from Swiss Re where she was Global Head of Standard Insurance Products. Ryan’s references also include his time at QBE and Munich Re.
“I am very pleased to join Sompo International at this time,” commented the CUO, who is now part of the company’s leadership team. “I see a tremendous opportunity to further improve the underwriting function and add value to the business.”
